Caring for your garage floor

Garages can be more than a place to park your car. In fact they are quite possibly the most versatile room in your house. Many of us use the garage for storage, practicing crafts or performing home improvement tasks. Some of us also use our garage as a workout room. Because of this, keeping the surface of your garage floor in good shape is an important, if overlooked, job.

How many of us really think about our garage floor? If we do we think of a bare concrete surface, that is probably dirtier than we care to think about. But there are ways to care for our garage floor, that will make it easier to clean, protect it from damage, and make it look more attractive. With all the options fallible today, it is a good time to be a garage floor.

At the very least your garage floor should be sealed with an acrylic sealer, to shield it from the abuse heaped on it by your car. Road salts, snow, oil and other car fluids can wreak havoc with your garage floor. Acrylic sealers also can be used as a primer for concrete floor paints. Painting the garage floor is another option which also has the added benefit of being attractive. Garage floor paints are epoxy paints, and require a lot of preparation to get a good result.

A quicker, easier way of protecting your garage floor is to use a rubber or vinyl covering. These versatile products come in a roll, or in interlocking tiles. They are available in a variety of styles, and colors. They are quite easy to install. They are a good choice if you use your garage for crafting, or as an exercise room because they are a softer, more forgiving surface.

It does pay to give some thought to your garage floor. It will make your house more attractive, and also increase its resale value.
